Melinda Paulsen studied at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and at the University of Music and Theater Munich with Daphne Evangelatos. In 1992, she received Second Prize at the ARD International Music Competition.

Paulsen has performed at international festivals. She has sung under Roberto Abbado, Marek Janowski, and Helmuth Rilling and has appeared in concert halls such as the Vienna Musikverein, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, and the Konzerthaus in Berlin.

Since 2003, she has been a professor of singing at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts.
