FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
... about the Classical Music Studio
1. What is the difference between GENUIN as a label and GENUIN as a classical recording studio?
The classical recording studio is the heart of our company. As certified Tonmeisters, we are dedicated to recording classical music—from planning and classical recording management to post-production and mastering.
The Label GENUIN was created as a platform for our own recordings. Today, we support selected productions with artistic advice, artwork, physical and digital releases as well as targeted press and social media work.
2. How is the process of a classical recording at GENUIN?
First, we plan the project together with the artists and discuss the repertoire, recording venue, and time schedule. On site, a classical Tonmeister takes charge of the recording session: setup, miking and sound adjustment, musical supervision, and communication with the artists. Finally, the material is post-processed and mastered in our studios in Leipzig.
3. Which venues are best for classical music recordings?
GENUIN produces recordings in concert halls, medium-sized churches, or other acoustically suitable venues. The size of the venue and its acoustic properties must be suited to the repertoire and instrumentation. At the same time, it must be located in a quiet area or be well acoustically shielded. We are familiar with many recording venues in Germany and Europe and would be happy to advise you. After all, the venue is part of the sound and has a decisive influence on the final result.
4. How does post-production work?
After the recording session, our Tonmeisters will edit the material in Leipzig, compiling a musically compelling version from a large number of takes. The musicians can then listen to the result online and request corrections, which we implement. Finally, at the mastering stage, we create the final version for CD or streaming release.
5. What equipment does GENUIN use?
We use high-quality microphones from Neumann, Schoeps, and Sennheiser, first-class converters from RME, MADI fiber optic transmission, and mobile recording technology at broadcast level. Post-production takes place in the three GENUIN studios in Leipzig, which are equipped for stereo, surround, and Dolby Atmos (according to Dolby specifications).
6. Can you record with GENUIN even if the recording is not released by GENUIN?
Yes, of course. GENUIN offers its recording services independently of any release via the label. You are free to release your production with another label or independently. Please contact us for a quote!
7. Can GENUIN organize an orchestra for solo concerts or film music recordings?
Yes, GENUIN works with numerous German and European symphony orchestras and conductors. Thanks to our long-standing relationships with these orchestras, we benefit from favourable terms and can take care of organising the venue, orchestra, conductor and recording period. Some of the orchestras have rehearsal rooms with such good acoustics that it is not necessary to rent an additional hall.
8. Does GENUIN also offer film music and soundtrack recordings?
Yes. We work with numerous symphony orchestras and conductors, and we can book these ensembles at favorable rates. Additionally, we have over 20 years of experience with European and international film productions, as well as soundtrack recordings for video games. SEGA, Microsoft, and Pixar are just a few examples. We have all the necessary technology for click recordings with large orchestras, synchronization, surround sound, and Dolby Atmos.
9. Can GENUIN also record in Dolby Atmos, and what are the advantages?
Yes, GENUIN also produces in Dolby Atmos. This 3D audio format allows sounds to be placed anywhere in the room, creating a particularly authentic and vivid experience of the recording space. On streaming platforms, this immersive experience can even be enjoyed binaurally through normal headphones. GENUIN has a specially equipped mixing studio for Atmos recordings in accordance with Dolby specifications in 7.1.4 format.
10. Can we also have GENUIN do the editing, mixing, or mastering?
Yes. If you already have a recording, we will be happy to take care of editing and mixing, correction rounds with the musicians, and mastering, even if the production was not carried out by us. Our team will always strive to make the best of the available material.
11. What is the difference between a classical music recording and a pop or jazz production?
Classical recordings require a particularly sensitive approach. The focus is on room acoustics, natural sound reproduction, instrumental details, and stylistically appropriate interpretations. That's why classical recordings are almost never made in acoustically dampened recording studios, but rather in halls with good acoustics. And the musicians always play together, never individually. It's also essential to have an experienced Tonmeister who is not only technically skilled, but above all has a solid background in classical music.
12. How much does a classical recording with GENUIN cost?
The costs depend on the scope of the project, including the number of recording days, lineup, recording location, and post-production work. Please feel free to contact us for a non-binding consultation, and we will provide you with a customized and transparent quote.
