The MDR Symphony Orchestra of Leipzig under its chief conductor Dennis Russell Davies presents Anton Bruckner’s symphonic cathedrals in their respective original versions. The journey begins with his earliest symphonic sketches and extends to his monumental late works—an ambitious project the orchestra has undertaken in collaboration with GENUIN. This time, the orchestra presents Symphony No. 2 in C minor. With each monthly release, listeners are brought step by step closer to the full scope of Bruckner’s symphonic oeuvre. In terms of form, scale, orchestration, melodic writing, and harmonic language, this work scarcely conformed to the stylistic conventions of its time at its premiere in 1873, and even in its original version already displays all the hallmarks of Bruckner’s fully developed symphonic conception.
