There is something magical about the moment when air rushes through 30 woodwind and brass instruments and a rich, brilliant sound emerges. One can experience this with the Saxon Wind Philharmonic with its distinctive symphonic wind instrumentation unique to the German orchestral landscape.

Ever since the orchestra was founded in 1950 under the name “Rundfunk-Blasorchester Leipzigˮ (Radio Wind Orchestra Leipzig), it has developed a singular concept of sound. Chameleon-like, the wind players imitate the string section and amaze the listener with new, fascinating timbres.

From the pianissimo of the brilliant woodwinds to the fortissimo of the radiant brass, supported by the rhythmic power of the percussion instruments, the Saxon Wind Philharmonic has a dynamic range that knows no bounds in its repertoire: from classical music, jazz, and film scores to original compositions, the orchestra captivates the listener with innovative programs that bridge the divide between popular and serious music. This diversity is further bolstered by the various chamber music ensemble formations, ranging from wind quintets to serenade ensembles.

In demand both in Europe and overseas, the Saxon Wind Philharmonic makes guest appearances at international music festivals and has found a permanent home in Bad Lausick with its own rehearsal and concert hall. The concert series in the districts of Leipzig and North Saxony are creating enthousiasm to the audience and enrich the region's cultural life. Starting in the 2019-2020 season, there have been additional concert series in Oschatz and Bad Düben.

The orchestra is one of the orchestras selected for Germany’s “Excellent Orchestral Landscapeˮ subsidy program sponsored by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
