Born in Sarpsborg, Norway, Thor-Harald Johnsen lives and works in Berlin. He initially studied classical guitar in Oslo, but his wide-ranging musical interests also include numerous folk instruments such as charango, balalaika, banjo, and mandolin.

Since beginning his studies in historical plucked instruments in Trossingen in 2000, the theorbo, lute, and chitarra have become central to his work. International concert appearances, numerous recordings, research projects in Norway and Germany, and various awards reflect the breadth of his career.
