Mike Svoboda studied composition and conducting in Chicago and was able to came to Germany after winning a composition competition prize, collaborating for eleven years with Karlheinz Stockhausen. As a concert trombone player, he has given the premiere performance of over 400 works including pieces by Peter Eötvös, Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm and has received commissions from the Hanover Staatstheater, the Mannheim Nationaltheater, the Stuttgart Staatstheater and German broadcaster Südwest-Rundfunk. As a composer and performer, Svoboda often blends elements of popular and traditional classical music genres. Several of his recordings have received the prestigious German Record Critics’ Award (Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik). In 2008 Svoboda was awarded the Lower Saxony State Praetorius Music Prize.
