At its best, Christmas is bound up with memories of the celebrations of our childhood. When a choir has a tradition as distinctive as that of the Göttinger Knabenchor, that is something truly special. Since 1962, the choir has performed Franz Herzog’s “Göttinger Christvesper”. Building on the tradition of the Dresden Kreuzchor, Herzog created a work that combines the Christmas story with traditional songs, the familiar with the new, and the musical language of the twentieth century with melodies from centuries past. GENUIN now presents excerpts from a recording of this remarkable Christmas oratorio featuring the Göttinger Knabenchor under the direction of Michael Krause. The recording brings this Göttingen Christmas tradition, still very much alive today, to listeners far beyond its original performance setting.
