The Rastrelli Cello Quartet was founded in 2002 by St. Petersburg cellist Kira Kraftzoff and Belarusian cellist Sergio Drabkin. Together with Kira Kraftzoff’s former students, Mischa Degtjareff and Kirill Timofeev, they formed the Rastrelli Cello Quartet. Its name comes from the Italian architect Bartholomeo Rastrelli, who was commissioned to build many important building in the new Russian capital city in the 18th century.
Sergio Drabkin arranged all the repertoire especially for the quartet. The Rastrelli Cello Quartet has made guest appearances at many festivals, including the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, the Cello Festival in Beauvais (France), the Rheingau Music Festival, the Meadowlark Music Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska (US), the European Music Festival in Sofia (Bulgaria), the Linköping Music Festival (Sweden), the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Rio International Cello Encounter (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and the Korsholm Festival (Finland). Numerous recordings testify to the wide range of styles and genres in their repertoire. Their CD Vol. 3 – Cello in Classic was nominated Record of the Year 2008 in Russia. In 2014, their Small Leningrad Symphony CD made the Top 10 for classical music on iTunes Russia.
