Jan Čmejla

Born in Prague in 2003, pianist Jan Čmejla is one of the outstanding talents of his generation. In March 2025, he became the first Czech to win first prize, the audience prize, and several special prizes at the International Bach Competition in Leipzig. This success was particularly significant, as the traditional competition was dedicated exclusively to piano for the first time in its 75-year history. At the Leipzig Bach Festival, he performed at the Gewandhaus both in a solo recital and with the Gewandhaus Orchestra under Jakub Hrůša.

He gained international recognition in 2019 as the overall winner of Concertino Praga, in 2021 at the Santa Cecilia International Competition, and in 2022 at the Concours interna-tional de piano d'Épinal. In 2023, he was accepted into the Foundation Gautier Capuçon, with whom he also performed. He was inspired early on by encounters and masterclas-ses, including at the Allianz Junior Music Camp with Lang Lang in 2015 and later with Boris Giltburg.

As a soloist, he has performed with the MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK, the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brno Philharmonic, and other leading Czech orchestras. Con-cert tours have taken him to Washington, D.C. (Kennedy Center), Chicago, Barcelona, Ottawa, and in 2024 to Asia for the first time with a debut in Hong Kong.

In addition to his concert activities, Jan is also passionate about teaching: at the age of 22, he gave masterclasses at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Education University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). His musical training began at the age of six in Prague, continued at the Prague Conservatory, and since 2022 at the Mannheim University of Music with Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy, who describes him as “one of the most exciting talents.”
