Since 2001, the Kammerakademie Potsdam (KAP) has played a defining role in the musical life of the Brandenburg state capital. As the resident orchestra of the Nikolaisaal, KAP creates compelling musical experiences and explores four centuries of music history with vitality and curiosity. From Potsdam, it extends its reach to audiences around the world through major concert tours in Germany and abroad, as well as numerous award-winning recordings. Several opus Klassik awards, the founding of Brandenburg’s first orchestral academy, and a steadily growing audience all attest to the success and innovative spirit of this independent ensemble of 32 musicians. Since summer 2025, the conductor and oboist François Leleux has served as its Artistic Director.
KAP offers an exceptionally diverse concert programme: large-scale symphonic concerts, a chamber music series at Potsdam’s Palais Lichtenau, the contemporary music series KAPmodern, the distinctive KAPmeets concerts, surprise performances in unusual venues across Potsdam, and long-standing successful collaborations, including with the Museum Barberini and the Potsdam City and State Library. A highlight of each season and a cultural landmark of the state capital is the Potsdam Winter Opera. This co-production between KAP and the Hans Otto Theatre has carried Potsdam’s 250-year operatic tradition into the present day since 2005.
Committed to making music accessible to all, the orchestra offers a wide range of formats, from interactive family concerts to workshops for schools and kindergartens. With the model project “Music Creates Perspectives,” which received the BKM Special Prize “Culture Opens Worlds” in 2017, KAP actively promotes cultural education, participation, and equal opportunities in Potsdam-Drewitz.
