Twenty-five years of "Ensemble Obligat": reason enough to celebrate and honor an extraordinary chamber music formation. On its anniversary CD on GENUIN, Ensemble Obligat has expanded into a chamber orchestra with soloists to present Johannes Brahms' Serenade No. 1 and Louis Spohr's large Nonet in F major. These are two pieces that require a balance between soloistic leadership and overall sound, a quality that the ensemble embodies perfectly. Brahms' youthful work takes on a chamber-music-like sonority in this version. The nonet of the "German Paganini" Louis Spohr, who broke exciting new ground in his time, benefits from the ensemble's harmonious spirit.

das Orchester
"The large wind instrumentation allows for a varied and colorful interplay of all obbligato (!) voices, which succeeds very vividly in the chamber-musical conception of the nonet and gives the ensemble the opportunity to show off its perfection in interplay and the virtuoso abilities of the performers."
Review by Heribert Haase, 04/2022

Fono Forum
"The Ensemble Obligat convinces with spotlessly clean intonation and perfect interplay."
Review by Elisabeth Richter, 02/2022

Klassik Heute
"The Ensemble Obligat Hamburg, founded in 1995, devotes itself to the pieces with musical seriousness and celebrates an opulent dark-colored overall sound. This emphasizes the symphonic-orchestral elements more than the serenade-like lightness, but seems convincing in its homogeneous balance in an original way.
The excellent recording technique beautifully reproduces the whole in transparent depth and spaciousness in all its sonic glory."
