Born in Wilhelmshaven, harpsichordist and organist Torsten Johann initiated the Alte Musik Sengwarden/Friesland concert series while still in secondary school. He studied Church Music at the University of Music, Drama and Media Hanover and completed his studies in the harpsichord solo class of Lajos Rovatkay. He was co-founder as well as harpsichordist and continuo player of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. His work in the area of Early Music includes regular study of sources and visits to libraries throughout the world. As an Early Music scholar he is uniquely qualified to develop programming of 17th-century repertoire. He is regularly invited to give workshops and lectures at, among others, the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt am Main. He founded the Klassik am Meer summer festival in his hometown of Wilhelmshaven in 2003 and conducts staged and concert performances of works there, ranging from Reinhard Keiser to Ludwig van Beethoven.
