Completion of the Bruckner Complete Recordings with Dennis Russell Davies and the MDR Symphony Orchestra

The MDR Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, continues its complete recording of Bruckner's symphonies with Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4.

While the Symphony No. 3, the so-called “Wagner Symphony,” was met with strong disapproval by the Viennese audience at its premiere in 1877—with many listeners walking out of the hall—the Symphony No. 4, the “Romantic,” brought the long-awaited breakthrough. Bruckner had already thoroughly revised the Symphony No. 4 even before it was first performed in public in 1881. This makes it all the more interesting that the MDR Symphony Orchestra is now performing the original version from 1874.
The Symphony No. 3 was also revised several times. When it was performed again in 1890, in a version that had since been heavily revised, it finally became a success. Jean Sibelius, who was in the audience himself, praised Bruckner as the greatest living composer of his time.

Both symphonies are already available.

Starting in the fall of 2020, the MDR Symphony Orchestra recorded all of Anton Bruckner’s symphonies live over the course of four concert seasons. These recordings are being released gradually on a monthly basis on popular streaming and download platforms, thus completing the full cycle of all of Bruckner’s symphonies in their original versions.

The Symphony No. 5 will follow in November 2026.
