Luxembourgish pianist Cathy Krier will perform the work Ithaca by composer Konstantia Gourzi for the first time at today's concert in the Philharmonie Luxembourg under the dreamy title ‘Lizt & Ravel: Piano Poems’.
Commissioned by the Philhamonie Luxembourg, the work finds its inspiration in the poem of the same name by the Greek poet Konstantinos Kaváfis. In it, the poet describes the journey to Ithaca as a series of different personal experiences, which the composer is able to express musically in her work using various means.
In addition to classical piano playing on the keyboard, the strings of the grand piano are made to resonate with the help of superballs, singing bowls and gemstones, creating fascinating sounds.
Cathy Krier's new album ‘Piano Poems’ will be released in September 2024, on which this work is also part of the chosen programme.
