Two cornerstones of the oeuvre of Sergei Rachmaninov, two masterworks of their genre are presented here by pianist Pietro Massa, the Orchestra Bruno Maderna and conductor Daniele Giorgi on this new GENUIN-CD. The combination of the Third Piano Concerto and the much too rarely played “Symphonic Dances” could not be more fortunate. The greatest conceivable contrasts are revealed to the listener within eighty minutes – breathtaking virtuosity and poetic magic, heaven-storming enthusiasm and ghostly stillness. With the Piano Concerto – principal work of Rachmaninov’s “Russian phase” and the Dances – his final work in any form – the interpreters of the CD offer “Rachmaninov compact” in the most brilliant way possible. One can hardly imagine the two works performed more soulfully, sensitively and beautifully.

Massa and the orchestra have managed to add a subtly soothing element … to the overloaded virtuosity. The solo part and orchestra do indeed interweave to form a homogeneous whole in which the two depend on each other in equal measure. (Piano News 4/2008)
