The Leipziger Symphonieorchester (LSO) celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2023. Throughout all these years, the name has occasionally changed, but not the role the orchestra has played.
Founded as the state orchestra of the district of Leipzig in 1963, concerts are just as much a part of the musicians’ daily lives as CD and theater productions. The ensemble collaborates with internationally renowned artists, but also gives young musicians the opportunity to put their skills to the test in concerts. Particularly in its cooperation with the music universities in Leipzig and Weimar and with the state music high schools, the orchestra fulfills the objective and responsibility of promoting young artists.
The Leipziger Symphonieorchester is very much committed to the preservation of cultural heritage. Whether at the Usedom Music Festival, the Darß Classic Nights, on the flower island of Mainau, at the Berlin Philharmonie, the Meistersingerhalle in Nuremberg, the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt, or the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Leipziger Symphonieorchester has long become synonymous with outstanding artistry.
The orchestra’s broad repertoire, which has been featured on several CD albums, ranges from Classical, Romantic, and modern symphonic music to opera, operetta, musicals, film music, and light symphonic music. Several chamber ensembles round out its wide-ranging activities.
Guest tours have taken the Leipzig Symphony Orchestra to Poland, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, South Korea, China, Hungary, and Mexico.
