Born in 1985 in Timisoara (Romania), Andrei Banciu began studying the piano in his home town with Maria Bodo, later continuing in Berlin at the University of the Arts under Klaus Hellwig and at the “Hanns Eisler” School of Music under Fabio Bidini. He also studied Lied accompaniment with Wolfram Rieger and attended masterclasses with Paul Badura-Skoda, Pascal Devoyon, Rainer Becker, Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, Jacques Rouvier, Menahem Pressler and Rudolf Buchbinder. He has won prizes at numerous music competitions, among them the Rovere d’Oro Competition in Italy (1995), Jeunesses Musicales Bucharest, Romania (1998 and 2002), the Kissinger Klavier Olymp Bad Kissingen, Germany (2004), the Béla Bartók International Piano Competition in Szeged, Hungary (2006) and the Artur Schnabel Piano Competition Berlin (2010). In 2015 he won a scholarship from the German Music Competition as a collaborative pianist, and was chosen for the 60 th series of Young Artists Concerts. In September of 2015 he and his duo partner, violinist Ioana Cristina Goicea, were awarded Second Prize at the International Competition “Premio Trio di Trieste” in Italy. Among other concert appearances, the duo has performed at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Athenaeum in Bucharest, the Teatro Ristori and the Teatro Filarmonico Verona and at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London. Since 2000 he has appeared with orchestras in Romania, Belgium, Hungary and Egypt, has performed as a soloist in Germany at, among others, Kissinger Sommer and the European Music Festival in Passau, in the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary and the US, and in recital with the Jacques Thibaud String Trio. Andrei Banciu has toured the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Great Britain, and Italy as a chamber musician and Lied accompanist. In 2010 he co-founded the Jacques Thibaud Ensemble as its pianist. From 2010 to 2013 he was a faculty member of the Musica Mundi Course and Festival in Belgium, where in 2012 he appeared as a soloist with the Festival Orchestra conducted by Maxim Vengerov and in 2013 with the Brussels Chamber Orchestra. He taught at Leipzig’s “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” University of Music and Theatre from 2012 to 2016 and at Berlin’s University of the Arts from 2014 to 2016. From 2016 to 2018 he held a teaching post at the University of Music “Franz Liszt” in Weimar and he has been on the faculty of the “Hanns Eisler” School of Music in Berlin since October 2018. Recordings have been made of his performances on Bayerischer Rundfunk, Deutschlandfunk, Radio France and Radio 4 Netherlands.
