Born in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, Vesselina Kasarova is one of the foremost mezzo-sopranos of our time. She received her earliest piano instruction at the age of four. After completing a master's degree, she studied voice performance under Ressa Koleva at the National Academy of Music in Sofia, and began performing major roles at the Sofia National Opera. In 1989 she won First Prize at the Neue Stimmen International Singing Competition in Gütersloh, Germany. In the same year she became an ensemble member of the Zurich Opera, where she quickly became a favorite of audiences and was acclaimed as a new discovery by the press. Her debuts as Annio (La clemenza di Tito) at the Salzburg Festival in 1991 under Sir Colin Davis and shortly thereafter as Rosina (Barber of Seville) under Donald Runnicles at the Vienna State Opera paved the way for her international career.

Since then the versatile singer has appeared in roles from Mozart, Handel, bel canto composers and the French repertoire at all the major opera houses and festivals in the world, among them the Royal Opera House Covent Garden London, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Opéra National de Paris, the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera New York, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Het Muziektheater Amsterdam, San Francisco Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, the Cologne Opera and at the Salzburg Festival, at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Italy. She has collaborated with such renowned conductors as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Colin Davis, Pinchas Steinberg, Donald Runnicles, Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Roger Norrington, Ivor Bolton, Semyon Bychkov, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Franz Welser-Möst and Mark Minkowski. She performs on the concert stage and in song recitals throughout Europe and in Japan. Her CD recordings have been honored with many prizes and in 2005 the title of Bavarian Kammersängerin was conferred upon her, followed by the title Austrian Kammersängerin in 2010.
