Duo Lontano, featuring the pianists Babette Hierholzer and Jürgen Appell, was founded in 2004. The two artists can look back on years of successful concertizing on extended tours to Italy, Germany, Venezuela, Mexico, Russia, Poland, and the USA. Their engagements included an invitation to Caracas, Venezuela, to perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concerto for
Two Pianos and Orchestra in E-flat major with the Orquesta Juvenil Simón Bolívar conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. They were invited to Havana, Cuba, to perform, among several four-hand piano recitals, The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns for two pianos and orchestra with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba under Enrique Pérez Mesa.

Recent concert highlights have included appearances in Würzburg (Germany), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain), Palermo (Italy), White Plains (USA), and Petrópolis (Brazil), as well as Hefei and Xi’an (China).

Duo Lontano has recorded CDs for GENUIN at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig (Germany). The first was an album featuring original four-hand works comprising the famous Octet and the Hebrides Overture by Felix Mendelssohn, followed recently by a recording of works by Franz Schubert including the Notturno and the Fantasia in F minor as well as a transcription by Robert Franz of the “Death and the Maiden” string quartet.
