The Philharmonic Choir was founded in 1972 and currently has around 65 active singers. In addition to choral symphonic works, mostly performed with the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the choir also performs a cappella concerts of various types.
Guest concerts have taken the choir to various German cities as well as to Bulgaria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Spain, France, Austria, Denmark, Italy and Scotland.
In 1991, the Philharmonic Choir Neubrandenburg e.V. became a member of the Association of German Concert Choirs (VDKC) in order to document its high quality standards to the outside world.
The choir's most important CD production was the 1996 recording of J. W. Hertel's “Die Geburt Jesu Christi”, the first ever recording of a choral symphonic work by Hertel.
Performing together with choirs from Neubrandenburg, Neustrelitz, Cologne and Berlin, as well as with choirs from Neubrandenburg's twin towns, such as Villejuif (France), Petrozavodsk (Karelia) and Gladsaxe (Denmark), has enriched choral life in the past and should continue to make Neubrandenburg's rich cultural life known beyond the borders of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the future. A long-awaited highlight in the choir's history was its participation in the opening of the Neubrandenburg Concert Church in July 2001.
